Procedure Description:

Sonohysterogram (ultrasound with water)

What To Expect:

This type of ultrasound allows the physician to see the lining of the uterus via ultrasound to check for any abnormalities that may be causing irregular bleeding and or pain. Some patients experience mild to moderate cramping when the water is injected through the catheter into the uterus. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and you should be able to return to normal activity when you leave the office. You do not require anyone to drive you for this procedure.

Take 600 mg of Motrin or another type of anti inflammatory medication to treat cramping no less than 30 minutes prior to procedure. You will also be given a prescription for an antibiotic to take the day prior to the procedure, the day of the procedure and the day after the procedure to prevent any infection because we are inserting a catheter and sterile water into the uterus.

You may have some spotting for a day or so after the procedure. If you experience any cramping it should subside within a few minutes. You should be able to return to your normal activities immediately. As with any procedure, if you experience any flu like symptoms, any fever over 100.4 F or any bleeding heavier than a period you should call.
